Brother Dominic, the Liberia Mission art teacher, asked me this during the kids’ art class last Wednesday. He motioned his hands to the sky, a tiny paintbrush in his hand. It was obvious he was referring to God.
“This (God’s masterpiece) is what I believe,” he said explaining why he likes art.
The kids continued drawing portraits and I attempted to sketch a portrait of my friend Sianneh sitting across from me. I, too, am convicted in God’s art – He reveals it to me each day in the beauty and wonder of His children. (Photos to come soon!)
Sianneh loves to sing and dance. She is a bright and patient spirit and can tell stories for hours. She shines with the selfless love of Christ.
Darius is playful and outgoing. He eagerly awaits his evening jogs around the football field. His specialty? Determination and a light heart. He wants to be a doctor one day. And he will.
Olena is fearless and strong. She could easily take on the boys in a game of football. She is a hard worker and has a deep, contagious laughter.
Joshua is a fighter. He is quick-witted and creative always coming up with new games and drawings. His favorite power ranger is red.
Alfrida is lovable and sweet. She is full of energy and will greet you with a hug at any time of the day. She is a professional jump roper, Liberian style.
Joseph is full of life. It is hard to catch him without a smile on his face or a new trick up his sleeve. He studies hard and has high standards. You may even catch him wearing a tie at dinner time.
The kids are all works of art. They are filling my heart with light and joy. They shine with the innocent faith, which God calls us to live. They have little and want little. And every day I make another friend that teaches me more about God, love, joy and family. Their spirit is contagious, and it will spread. There is nothing strong enough to keep it from reaching to the ends of the earth. I am convicted in God’s creation. I am convicted in His power. He is the most amazing artist.
